Stroke Support Event Highlights One of Delmarva’s Major Health Dangers

More than 7 million people in the United States today have survived a stroke. But life can often change afterward. The effects of these brain attacks create challenges with processes once taken for granted — anything from movement to speech to memory.
May is National Stroke Month, and Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury is highlighting the issue by hosting a special Stroke Support Group event that will bring together top specialists from the Medical Center to answer questions about stroke care and recovery. The event will be held on May 7, 2013 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Hallowell Conference Center at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Register by calling 410-912-7961.

Providing their expertise will be Jacek Malik, MD, Ph.D., Neurosurgeon; Jeffery Anderson, D.O, Physiatrist; Richard Bird, MD, Neurologist; Clark Willis, MD, Emergency Medicine; and Kevin Healy, PA, Hospitalist. Community members are invited to come meet other survivors of stroke and their caregivers, and to learn more about the resources that the support group can provide. To register for the event, call 410-912-7961.

More about stroke
Stroke is a particularly serious health issue on Delmarva. The Stroke Team at Peninsula Regional treats on average nearly 40 patients with stroke symptoms every month, volumes that rival centers like Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and others in much larger, urban areas. The Primary Stroke Center at Peninsula Regional Medical Center is one of 17 hospitals in Maryland and the only hospital on the Eastern Shore to achieve and maintain the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval for certification as a Primary Stroke Center since 2006. All stroke cases are directed to PRMC, because the state has deemed it the fastest and best equipped to handle this traumatic event.

And once patients have had a stroke, Peninsula Regional Medical Center has been finding ways to improve their life afterward. Many rehabilitation programs are available, and the Medical Center hosts the Stroke Support Group every month.
One crucial piece of information that panelist Dr. Bird hopes everyone will learn about strokes: “When you have symptoms, don’t wait for them to go away. Go straight to the emergency room. Time means brain. The longer treatment is delayed, the more difficult stroke symptoms are to treat.”
More than 30 percent of people on the Lower Shore have risk factors for stroke — but still many people don’t know when they are at risk, nor are they aware of the symptoms.

To spare yourself or a loved one from the most devastating effects a stroke can bring, learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of stroke. Learn FAST:

F — Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
A — Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S — Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Does the speech sound slurred or strange?
T — Time: If you observe any of these signs, then it’s time to call 9-1-1.

Peninsula Regional Offers Free Clinical Breast Exams in May

Pamela Fleckenstein, MSN, CRNP-BC, program coordinator for Women's Wellness & Gynecology at PRMC, recently participated in free clinical breast screenings at healthFest. There's another chance for free clinical breast exams in May at PRMC.

Pamela Fleckenstein, MSN, CRNP-BC, program coordinator for Women’s Wellness and Gynecology at PRMC, recently participated in free clinical breast screenings at HealthFest. There’s another chance for free clinical breast exams in May at PRMC.

The Breast Center at Peninsula Regional’s Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute is offering one of the best gifts any woman will receive for Mother’s Day: the opportunity for a free clinical breast exam.
Early detection is the best way to make sure that women with breast cancer have the best possible treatment options and outlook. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast — important factors in predicting the prognosis of a woman with this disease.

So bring your mother, sister or best friend and join them for a clinical breast exam and education to perform self-breast exams. Speak to clinicians about your questions or concerns and have them answered, woman to woman.

There are two opportunities for the free exams: Thursday, May 9 and Thursday, May 16, from 3-6 p.m. each day. Screenings will be held at the Breast Center at Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. To register for a free clinical breast exam, call 410-543-7006.

Free Skin Cancer Screening at Peninsula Regional Medical Center

Don't forget your sunscreen this summer! And to make sure you're safe from skin cancer, sign up for a free skin cancer screening at PRMC.

Don’t forget your sunscreen this summer! And to make sure you’re safe from skin cancer, sign up for a free skin cancer screening at PRMC.

*UPDATE: Unfortunately, all of our screening appointments have been booked! The Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute is planning for more in November. If you have an immediate concern, please see your doctor – don’t wait. Take care of any suspicious moles or spots on your skin as promptly as you can – early detection can make a difference!*

Free skin cancer screenings will be held soon at the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute at Peninsula Regional Medical Center to coincide with the national observance of Melanoma Monday and Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. Appointments are required, and will be taken from April 15-19 from 8 a.m. to noon. To schedule an appointment, call 410-543-7139. The dates of the screenings will be Monday, May 6 and Monday, May 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. each day.

The screenings are part of a national campaign to encourage early detection and teach prevention of skin cancer. More than 1 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year. “The key to successful treatment of most types of skin cancer is early detection and treatment,” said Thomas M. DeMarco, MD, Medical Director of the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute. Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime and those rates are higher on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
The American Academy of Dermatology’s national detection and prevention program is in its 27th year and launches on May 6, which has been designated as Melanoma Monday to raise awareness of melanoma and urge Americans to regularly examine their skin for signs of this serious form of skin cancer and to protect themselves against damage from the sun with sunscreen daily. Skin self-examinations consist of periodically looking over your body for any changes in color, shape or texture of a mole, the development of a new mole or any other unusual changes in the skin. Any of these signs should be reported to a dermatologist right away.
“We want everyone to consider Melanoma Monday this first of a lifelong habit of examining their skin,” said dermatologist Luette Semmes, MD. “Melanoma Monday is like New Year’s Day for dermatologists. It’s a day we encourage everyone to start a new life-saving habit.”

A survey commissioned by the Academy showed that less than one-third of Americans currently examine their skin for signs of melanoma and more than half don’t know the signs of melanoma. Dermatologists want to change this because when treated in its earliest stages, melanoma can be cured. If not treated early, the disease can quickly spread to other parts of the body and be fatal.
A recent study published by the Mayo Clinic found that melanoma rates are eight times higher than they were 40 years ago in young women. One American dies from melanoma almost every hour and more than 75 percent of skin cancer deaths are from melanoma.
The free screenings will be held on the second floor of the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute at PRMC. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 410-543-7139 during the week of April 15-19 from 8 a.m. to noon.
