New Digital Imaging System Added in Peninsula Regional Catheterization Lab

A new digital imaging system is advancing care and improving safety at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. The recently installed GE Innova IGS 520 is the industry’s latest all-digital imaging system for Interventional Cardiology.

Cardiac catheterization is a procedure used to diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions. The catheter, a narrow, tube-like instrument, is guided through patients’ blood vessels to the heart. It can be used to find heart defects or disease, or to help in angioplasties and stent placement. The technique requires great accuracy, and imaging equipment in the catheterization lab helps ensure that the catheter is following the right path.

“The improved imaging is a real step forward. It allows the physician to see the stent more clearly prior to deploying it,” said Peter Greenlees, Director of the Catheterization Lab at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

The IGS 520 allows for better imaging during the procedure with more sophisticated digital tools. It also allows for significantly less radiation to be used during x-rays and other imaging procedures. “It is much safer for both patients and staff,” Greenlees said.

The new equipment has even expanded the catheterization lab’s range of services. The improved imaging means it can be used in non-coronary angiography, which allows for procedures on the peripheral arteries.

Delmarva: Participate in ‘Don’t Fry’ Day!

sunscreen

Remember to stay sun-safe this summer!

Gearing up for a big holiday weekend? The forecast is calling for warm, sunny days – perfect for picnics and barbecues, but also the right conditions to get your first sunburn of the year.

Don’t forget to cover up and use sunscreen to protect your skin from damage that can cause aging signs and even cancer. This Friday, May 25, is National “Don’t Fry” Day — a day to kick off the summer season by being sun-safe. Take these four precautions: Slip, Slop, Slap …and Wrap!

  • Slip on a SHIRT.
  • Slop on some SUNSCREEN (SPF of at least 30 – and don’t forget to reapply after swimming or sweating).
  • Slap on a wide-brimmed HAT.
  • Wrap on some SUNGLASSES.

Need some motivation to avoid getting too many rays? Remember:

  • Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States.
  • More than 3.5 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed and 2.2 million people are treated annually.
  • It is estimated that one American dies every hour from skin cancer.
  • Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung, and colon.
  • One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.
  • Melanoma is the second most common form of cancer for young adults 15-29 years old. IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE!
  • At Peninsula Regional’s Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute, 11 percent of all new cancers diagnosed in 2010 were melanoma cases, well above the Maryland average of 5 percent.

Delmarva Families Discuss Bald Barbie

WBOC has an excellent story about two little girls on the Delmarva Peninsula who have faced cancer, and what Mattel’s new bald Barbie doll would mean to them. Our own Lisa Barnes, a nurse navigator at the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute at PRMC, also talks about how the doll can be helpful for children. But the best part of the story is hearing that Salisbury’s Brooke Mulford, after a real battle, is cancer free! And we’re all wishing 3-year-old Saylor Hayes best of luck with her treatment.  Check out the story over on WBOC.com.

PRMC Walks at Lunch

Peninsula Regional employees enjoy the Wicomico Walk at Lunch.

May 16 was National Employee Health & Fitness Day, and lots of Peninsula Regional employees came out along with fellow community members to enjoy the Wicomico County Walk at Lunch. Staged by the Wicomico Executive Fitness Council (and sponsored in part by Peninsula Regional Medical Center Food Services and Peninsula Regional Medical Center Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab), there were even some fitness demos by PRMC staffers at the finish. The mile-plus loop took walkers around the Wicomico Riverwalk and through the Downtown Plaza, and finished in a healthy lunch — all free! It served as a great reminder that a walk at lunchtime is always a fun, easy and free way to stay fit.
